PRESIDENT CALLS FOR RENEWED UNITY

Jakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all people here on Sunday to unite again to achieve progress.

Speaking at a fast-breaking gathering at the residence of the chairman of the Regional Representatives Council, Ginandjar Kartasasmita, the President expressed optimism that Indonesia would be able to transform into an advanced country in the 21st century.

"We are still a young nation compared to other advanced countries. However, if we unite and work harder I believe we will achieve progress." he said.

He admitted that it would not be so easy and take time to become an advanced nation.
Referring to the United States as an example he said that country became an industrialized country after more than 200 years of independence while China started its transformation since 1978. He also referred to the transformation brought by Prophet Mohammad while in Medina. "Transformation needs time," he said.
President Yudhoyono reiterated the importance of three pillars that could bring progress to the country he conveyed at the commemoration of the recent 100th anniversary of the National Awakening Day , namely competitiveness, civilization and self-reliance.
As a great nation, he said, Indonesia has proven to be able to overcome all kinds of crises even fundamental ones.
"God willing we will be able to do it because we are a great nation that are able to overcome any crisis from time to time," he said.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla was seen at the function along with several cabinet ministers as well as other high-ranking officials such as state minister for state-owned companies Sofyan Djalil, state minister for administrative reform, Taufiq Effendy, defense forces commander General Djoko Santoso, and Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo.
Ginandjar Kartasasmita meanwhile said in his speech on the occasion that many present state officials would be involved in a police process for the 2009 general elections.
He believed however their involvement would not affect their present duty.
