VOTERS' DECISION IN 2009 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION DIFFICULT TO PREDICT

Yogyakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - A local party leader said here on Sunday voters' decision in next year's presidential election would be difficult to predict.

"The people are now increasingly selective so it is very difficult to map out their political preferences," the head of the Yogyakarta regional chapter of the Golkar Party, Gandung Pardiman, said.

He said before giving their vote in the next general and presidential elections they would scrutinize their candidates with regard to their intellectuality, character, and commitment to the people and anti-corruption drive as well as political parties that support them.
"If a candidate is considered to meet the criteria they would choose him. However if no candidate is meeting the criteria they would become an absentee or not use their right," he said.
In view of that he said political parties need to anticipate it by not arbitarilly choose candidates. "Parties have really truly selective because people can no longer be deceived. They do not want promises only," he said.
He said people would choose leaders who were committed to fighting for their interest. "They want a change and would give their votes to those who could make improvements. If they find no candidates that meet their wishes they would become absentees as seen in the recent regional elections," he said.
