KADIN QUESTIONS FUEL TAX HIKE FOR PRIVATE CARS
Jakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) asked the government to explain the reason for its policy to raise fuel tax for private cars from five percent to 10 percent.
"This is to prevent the emergence of unrest in the society that could disturb economic stability," Chairman of Kadin's Standing Committee for Fiscal and Monetary Affairs, Bambang Soestyo said here on Sunday.
He said the tax was imposed on the price of fuels, including automotive diesel oil and gas.
"The subject of the tax policy are consumers while the oil suppliers such as state-owned oil company Pertamina will act as a tax-payer," he said.
Bambang said that if it was Pertamina who was to pay the consumers' taxes it should then be questioned whether Pertamina would raise the present fuel oil prices.
"I mean that with this policy whether Pertamina is going to raise the prices of premium gasoline, diesel oil and gas," he added.
On the other hand, it should also be questioned whether the tax would also be imposed on subsidized fuel oils.
"In order to avoid unrest in society the special committee of the House of Representatives (DPR) which will examine fuel price hikes also need to explain the reasons for the tax increase policy," he added.
