Another Vietnamese bride killed by S. Korean husband

CHEONGDO, South Korea/HANOI, May 24 (Yonhap) -- A Vietnamese woman was killed by her South Korean husband in a rural South Korean town on Tuesday, police said, triggering memories of a similar tragedy less than a year ago.
The 23-year-old bride, identified only by her surname of Hwang, was stabbed by her husband at their home in Cheongdo, a town in the southeastern part of the country, at about 1:10 a.m., police said. The 37-year-old husband, identified only by his surname of Im, was quoted as telling the police that he stabbed his wife during an argument.
In July last year, another Vietnamese woman was killed by her mentally ill South Korean husband just eight days after she arrived in the country to live with him. The incident drew public attention to the plight of international marriages brokered by matchmaking agencies and prompted a nationwide clampdown on illegal matchmaking firms.
The couple in Tuesday's incident had married in April last year and recently had a son, according to the police. The 19-day-old baby was found crying next to his bleeding mother when police officers arrived at the scene, while his father was caught nearby carrying a weapon in his hand, they said.
A neighbor reported Im to the police after hearing him kick a neighbor's door and shout out that he had killed a person.
Alarmed by the news, South Korean embassy staff in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi held an emergency meeting to determine the details of the incident, an embassy official there said.
"We're afraid that all our efforts to strengthen the monitoring of matchmaking agencies and conduct health checks on South Korean marriage-seeking men will come to nothing," the official said on the condition of anonymity.
"At the time of the previous incident (in July), our government offered a formal apology and announced measures to prevent the recurrence of such an incident, which helped to lessen the tragedy's impact," said another embassy official, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity. "This time, we will also focus on minimizing the aftereffects through close cooperation between our relevant authorities and the Vietnamese government."
Police said they plan to seek an arrest warrant for the husband on charges of murder and perform an autopsy on the wife's body to determine the exact cause of her death.
