Another woman dies at Umaid Hospital

Jodhpur(Rajasthan), May 25 (PTI) A young woman died
Wednesday after delivery at Umaid Hospital in western Indian
city of Jodhpur, where 17 maternal deaths have taken place in
the past few months due to medical negligence, trigerring
violent protests from her relatives who beat up two doctors
including the hospital head.
Protesting the attack on their colleagues, resident
doctors of the hospital went on a strike demanding security
for doctors in hospitals.
Sarika (22) died due to excessive bleeding after
delivering a baby girl. Following her death, her family
members, alleging negligence by doctors, went berserk,
smashing window panes and damaging furniture.
The victim's kin also beat up a doctor and the
superintendent of the hospital.
Sarika's husband Jaswant Singh said she was admitted to
the hospital yesterday afternoon and delivered a baby girl
today through normal delivery.
He said Sarika was completely normal till the delivery,
but after it she started bleeding profusely. The doctors took
her to the operation theatre and operated upon her for removal
of the uterus, but the bleeding remained unabated and she
succumbed to it.
"We were kept in dark during this entire process," Singh
alleged.
The victim's family also refused to take away her body
demanding suspension of the erring doctors, including the
superintendent, and compensation.
Significantly, Sarika's parents are employees of the same
hospital.
The agitated family members could be controlled only
after the police arrived.
The hospital administration has filed a complaint with
the police against the victim's relatives.
Meanwhile, the divisional commissioner has sought a
report of the incident from R K Aseri, principal of S N
Medical College and a team comprising four doctors has been
constituted by him to inquire into the matter.
The hospital had recently hogged media glare following 17
maternal deaths there due to administration of contaminated IV
Fluid.
