PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO DISCUSSES FERTILIZER ISSUE
Jakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chaired a limited cabinet meeting at his office here on Monday to discuss issues related to seeds and fertilizer.
In response to the press' questions before attending the meeting, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said the case of "Supertoy HL2" rice seeds was not the only issue to be discussed in the meeting.
"I think the case related to Supertoy seeds has been dealt with by Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono and it can be solved in the field," Hatta Radjasa said, adding that what Anton had said was clear enough. Anton said earlier that the new rice variety had not passed a seedling test by his office's research unit.
According to the Jakarta Post on Tuesday, Supertoy HL2 reportedly turned out to be a hoax after farmers at Grabag village in Purwarejo, Central Java, failed to reap a second harvest of the new rice variety earlier this month, ultimately setting fire to the paddy field out of anger.
Hatta Radjasa said the problem with the farmer would be overcome immediately.
Present in the limited cabinet meeting were Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, State Minister for State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil, State Minister for Communication and Information Muhammad Nuh, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Acting Coordinating Minister for Economy Sri Mulyani, National Police Chief Gen Sutanto, and presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng.
Hatta said that before chairing the limited cabinet meeting to discuss issues on seeds and fertilizer, President Yudhoyono earlier held a similar gathering to discuss the preparations of Asian Beach Games (ABG) which is to be held for the first time in Bali from October 18-26, 2008.
The president is scheduled to officially open the ABG, an Asian beach sports competition at Nusa Dua on the resort island of Bali on October 18, 2008.
