India terms disturbing wrongful arrest of diplomat's daughter

From V Mohan Narayan
Addis Ababa, May 25 (PTI) India has termed as "rather
disturbing" the manner in which the daughter of one of its
diplomats in the US was treated by American authorities on a
false charge.
"We have expressed our anguish and taken up the issue
strongly with the US," Indian government sources said
Wednesday in response to a question.
"It is intriguing that on a mere complaint of a
principal, she was taken into custody and kept in a lock up,"
the sources said.
But the student who confessed to having sent the
objectionable communication was merely moved to another school
and no action was taken against him.
"This is rather disturbing," the sources said.
Krittika Biswas, 18, the daughter of the vice counsel
at Indian Consulate in Manhattan, Debashish Biswas, is suing
New York City's government for USD 1.5 million for what she
claims was a wrongful arrest on the suspicion of sending
obscene emails to her teacher in Queens' John Browne High
School.
She also claimed that she was ill-treated in the
prison. Biswas alleged that she was not allowed to use the
bathroom for a long-time when she was in custody at the 107th
precinct.
Later, it emerged that Biswas did not send the emails
and the school authorities eventually allowed her back to the
school after the real culprit was found.
