Azerbaijani Embassy in Canada celebrates Azerbaijan Republic`s Day
Baku, May 27 (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan Embassy in Canada hosted a reception on the occasion of the 28 May, Republic Day of Azerbaijan in Ottawa.
The event brought together members of Canadian parliament, diplomats of embassies accredited in Ottawa, as well as representatives of various communities.
Addressing the event, Azerbaijani ambassador to Canada Farid Shafiyev noted the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic is the first democratic republic in the East established on May 28, 1918. He added that female suffrage had been recognized in Azerbaijan before several European countries.
The diplomat briefed the participants on economic development after Azerbaijan restored its independence in 1991 and provided information on Azerbaijan-Canada relations.
Mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson ordered to designate 28 May, 2011 as the Azerbaijan Republic Day.
