NUMBER OF PEOPLE GOING HOMETOWN FOR IDUL FITRI PREDICTED TO RISE
Jakarta, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - The number of people going hometown during Idul Fitri holidays was predicted to increase up to 6.14 percent, the Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafii Djamal said here Monday.
At a hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission V, Djamal also explained his ministry's preparations for the upcoming annual exodus.
"We've been coordinating with other related institutions like the National Police, the Ministry of Public Works, and Bina Marga (a state-owned road construction company)," Djamal said.
The peak day of the 2008 homecoming season is predicted to be on September 29, 2008, or two days before the Idul Fitri celebration.
However, the minister also admitted there would be some problems.
"There are still unfinished projects like road rehabilitation in certain areas in Sumatra and Java. Also, the hot mud flood in Sidoarjo would disturb the traffic in Surabaya and surroundings, and the traffic to Java from Bali and vice versa," he explained.
To overcome the problems, the minister has set a number of policies about transportation control during the Idul Fitri, such as setting the price limits of railway tickets and giving priority to the distribution of the primary daly-needs.
