GOVT TO SUPPORT ASIAN BEACH GAMES FUNDING

Jakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will fully support the holding and funding of the first Asian Beach Games in Bali from October 18 to 25, Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said here Monday.

After a limited cabinet meeting led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the minister expressed hope the promising sponsors would provide additional funds and the government would fully support the upcoming event.

The government expected the event would be held successfully like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bali at the end of 2007.

"President instructs related ministries, governors and mayors across Bali to support the event," he said.

Bakrie said president Yudhoyono would inspect the sites directly on October 11 to make sure that the preparation for the event has been made well.

The opening ceremony of the event would feature arts and cultural performances, he added.

The first ever beach games in the world will be participated in by 4000 athletes from 45 countries and held in 14 locations across Bali.

A number of heads of state are also scheduled to attend the occasion.

"There are some heads of the state who have informed the possibility of their attendance so the government will definitely prepare the protocol, security and the events' organization well," he added.

The games of the event will be held in different locations at the same time so President Yudhoyono expected that he had information in a week time about the heads of state who would come to the event.

It was mentioned earlier that the funding still lacked around US$ 18.82 million from the total budget of around US$ 32 million.

Vice president Jusuf Kalla, State Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Adhyaksa Dault, Head of the Indonesian National Sports Committee Rita Subowo, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda and Communications and Information Minister M. Nuh were also present in the meeting which lasted for two hours.
