OFFICIALS OF KPU OFFICE IN RIAU ISLANDS TO DISCUS GUS DUR'S CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT
Tanjungpinang, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - An official of the General Election Commission (KPU), Riau Islands chapter, will fly to Jakarta to discuss the statement of the National Awakening Party's Advisory Council Chairman Abdurrahman Wahid alias Gus Dur with the management of the KPU head office.
Ferry Manalu, a member of the Riau Islands KPU office, on Monday said Gus Dur's statement as carried in the media also triggered concern on the part of the KPU which takes care of the implementation of the general elections.
"We have established coordination with the police to guard the KPU office," Ferry said.
According to him, in the post registration period of legislative nominees running for 2009 general election, the condition of the KPU office in district/city of Riau Island was safe, even PKB of Gus Dur's camp objected to registration of nominees.
The management of Gus Dur's Camp PKB ever took the forms for the registration of legislative nominees. But they never returned it to the KPU office after the Law and Human Rights Ministry decided the legitimate PKB was the Muhaimin camp.
"So far, everything is safe and okay. But we can not anticipate what will happen after Gus Dur instructed his supporters to occupy the KPU office," he said.
He further said that the KPU worked on the basis of the law and never took sides with any political party or camp.
"We are independent and will never take sides with other parties," he stressed.
In addition, KPU also discussed the potentials of conflicts in the runup to the 2009 general elections, he said.
