Activist Warns of US Plot to Hijack Regional Revolutions

TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent political analyst cautioned that the West has initiated efforts to hijack popular uprisings in the region and derail the wave of the Islamic awakening in the Middle-East and North Africa that has already ousted US-backed regimes in Tunisia and Egypt.
"Unfortunately, it seems that (West's) operations for hijacking these revolutions, specially the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, have started and efforts are underway to take advantage of them," Head of the Center for South-Iraq Studies Ali Ramadan al-Awsi told FNA on Tuesday.

He pointed to the US meddling in Egypt and Tunisia and the NATO-led military intervention in Libya, and said these moves are back-stage conspiracies that are aimed at hijacking the achievements of these revolutions.

"Nations and revolutionary forces shouldn't allow the US, the Zionist regime (of Israel) and the NATO members hijack their achievements since they are worried about the Islamic awakening and try to channel this overwhelming popular movement into their interests, specially the US and Israeli interests," Awsi stated.

"In fact, colonialists want to hijack any development in the world in a bid to materialize their interests," the analyst stated.

In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.

Other revolutions, then, erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests have started in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
