Hurriyat Conference leaders put under house arrest
Srinagar, June 3 (PTI) Hurriyat Conference leaders
Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Shabir Ahmad
Shah were on Friday put under house arrest as authorities
apprehended breach of peace due to their planned activities.
The activities planned by Geelani, Mirwaiz and Shah
for the day could have led to assembly of people, which could
have been misused by elements inimical to peace, police
sources said.
Geelani had planned to distribute pamphlets about
alleged human rights violations and ground situation in
Kashmir to tourists visiting the Valley, the sources said.
While, Mirwaiz was to lead a procession from Jamia
Masjid in Nowhatta to his party headquarters at Rajouri Kadal
after Friday prayers, they said.
The sources said it has been observed in the past that
miscreants take advantage of the large gatherings and indulge
in stone-pelting, leading to disruption in peace.
Shah was scheduled to visit Pakherpora in central
Kashmir Budgam district for addressing a Friday congregation,
they said.
