GARUDA READY TO LOWER FUEL SURCHARGES

Jakarta, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - Garuda Indonesia is ready to lower its fuel surcharges in response to calls from relevant parties, its president director said.

"God willing, in the next 10 days there will be a decision to that effect. Basically, we are ready," Emirsyah Satar said after a hearing with the transportation commission of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Monday.

The statement came on the heels of Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal's decision to form a team to audit fuel surcharges which had so far not been lowered.

State oil and gas company Pertamina itself had lowered the price of airplane fuel (avtur) and that airlines must adjust to it, the minister said.

As of Sept 1 the price of avtur including sales tax was lowered to Rp10,021 a liter from Rp11,825 a liter in August.

Emirsyah said in the 10 days' time Garuda would look at whether or not the price of avtur set by Pertamina would be stable.

Head of Garuda's Communications Service Pujobroto meanwhile said the national flag carrier spent Rp1.9 trillion on avtur in the first half of last year.

The figure jumped to Rp3.2 trillion in the first semester of 2008, he said.

"Under normal circumstances, avtur spending accounts for 20-25 percent of the total expenses. But this time it has already reached 40-45 percent," he said.

Earlier, Lion Air Corporate Secretary Hasyim Arsal Alhabsy said the airline was ready to lower its fuel surcharges.

"We are ready to lower our fuel surcharges any time. If Pertamina lowers the price of avtur by 15 percent we will also reduce our fuel surcharges by the same percentage," he said.
