CWG scam: absconding CWG official surrenders, sent to jail
New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) Absconding former Commonwealth
Games Organising Committee Treasurer M Jayachandran, accused
of committing irregularities in awarding of a Games-related
contract to a Swiss firm, has been sent to Tihar Jail by a
Delhi court.
Special Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) Judge
Talwant Singh remanded Jayachandran in judicial custody Friday
after he surrendered before the court which had earlier issued
a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him.
He failed to comply with the conditions imposed on him
after he was granted bail in another case related to the
Games held last year.
Jayachandran was also named as an accused for his role in
awarding of a contract to a Swiss firm at an exorbitant cost
for installing Timing Scoring and Results (TSR) system for the
Games.
The court had issued NBW against him and asked CBI to
arrest him by June 6.
The court had issued NBW against Jayachandran after
CBI submitted that he was not co-operating in the probe and
had stopped appearing before it after his role surfaced as
an accused in the case.
Three other accused, including Anil Madan, P D Arya
(both promoters of Faridabad-based Gem International Firm) and
A K Reddy of Hyderabad-based firm, AKR Constructions, are
still absconding and they were declared proclaimed offenders
by the court on May 23.
Jayachandran was earlier arrested on November 15,
2010, for alleged financial bunglings in holding the Queen
Baton's Relay (QBR) in London in 2009.
He was then granted bail by the Delhi High Court on
January 19 due to CBI's failure to wind up the probe and file
the charge sheet in the case within the stipulated 60-day
period.
CBI had on May 20 filed its first charge sheet in
the case against three companies and eight persons, including
sacked OC chief Suresh Kalmadi, describing him as a main
accused in the corruption case involving award of Rs 141 crore
contract to the Swiss firm.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly
awarded the lucrative contract to the Swiss firm to install a
Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the Commonwealth Games
at an exorbitant cost, causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to
the exchequer.
