30 injured in pre-dawn police sweep at Ramlila Maidan

New Delhi, June 5 (PTI) Over 60 people, including four
women and 23 security personnel, were injured in the wee hours
Sunday when police fired teargas shells and resorted to
lathicharge to disperse the crowd which had gathered at
Ramlila Maidan to support Indian yoga guru Baba Ramdev.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said 39
supporters including 4 women and 23 policemen sustained
injuries in the police action which took place after Ramdev's
supporters turned violent when security personnel tried to
detain the yoga guru.
"His followers came in the way and started pelting
stones, flower pots and whatever they could get their hands
on. This ensued some pushing & pulling between the policemen
and the supporters resulting in injuries to supporters as well
as policemen," he said.
Bhagat said police exercised great restraint in
dealing with supporters and situation, a claim flatly
rejected by the protestors who alleged highhandesness by
security personnel.
"In order to contain the situation from deteriorating,
the police lobbed eight teargas shells. This forced the
supporters to vacate the venue although after much
resistance," he said.
A senior medical official in LNJP hospital
said, "almost thirty people, who sustained injuries have been
admitted to nearby Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital."
Dr Lokesh of the LNJP hospital said some of the
followers, who were admitted, suffered limb and head injuries.
