Greeks protest gov't austerity plan for 12th day

Tehran, June 6, IRNA – For the 12th consecutive day tens of thousands of Greek people took to the streets of the capital Athens to show their anger against the government's austerity plan.

According to Greek police's estimates, nearly 80,000 protesters gathered in Athens' main square.

The protesters waving Greece, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia and Argentine flags chanted slogans such as 'Thieves, Thieves.'

A motto written on a banner carried out by protesters read: 'You brought an illness with yourself and we have brought remedy to that illness which is revolution.'

The mass demonstration comes a day after Greece's two main private and public sector unions protested in central Athens to condemn the government's new bailout deal from international lenders.

Drowning in debt, Greece won Friday the pledge of a new bailout on top of a July cashflow fix from European Union and International Monetary Fund, but only after surrendering some of its financial autonomy.

International backers want greater control over a radical economic overhaul, ranging from decisions over the privatisation of Greek state assets to fixing the country's chaotic tax collection system./end
