Poland hints at support for UN recognition of Palestine

Berlin, June 7, IRNA -- Poland's Ambassdor to Germany Marek Prawda here Monday hinted at his country's support for the Palestinian independence bid in the UN General Assembly in September.
Meeting with Berlin-based foreign journalists at the Polish Embassy, Prawda stressed although his country had 'no explicit stance' on the issue, he 'assumed' that Poland would go ahead and vote in favor of Palestine's diplomatic recognition by the UN.
The Polish diplomat whose country takes over the rotating European Union presidency on July 1, pointed out that Poland has 'traditionally showed understanding for Palestinian concerns.'
Poland is among numerous EU states, including France, Britain, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Hungary, that have so far signalled readiness to back a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state.
More than 110 countries, among them the emerging global powers Brazil, China, India, Russia or South Africa, have also indicated they would back the Palestinian independence campaign in the UN.
Meanwhile, Germany vowed last week to collaborate with the US to torpedo Palestinian efforts to seek UN diplomatic recognition.
A high-ranking German government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed this week's talks between US President Barack Obama and Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington were to dwell on ways to sabotage the Palestinian statehood bid in the UN General Assembly.
The meeting between Obama and Merkel will focus on the 'tactics and strategies' ahead of a likely UN vote on a Palestinian state, the official said.
We do not want to 'sit like a rabbit in front of a snake and wait to see what happens but we want to try shape things' on this issue, he added.
We want to channel things in our direction. Without a doubt we are facing time pressure as the UN date is approaching, according to the official.
Germany and US are two die-hard allies of the Zionist regime as both of them have also kept silent and at times even openly supported Israeli atrocities and massacres in the occupied territories./end
