New commander named for 2nd U.S. Infantry Division in S. Korea
SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. Defense Department has selected a deputy commander in Iraq to become the new commander of the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division in South Korea, an official at U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) said Friday.
Maj. Gen. Edward C. Cardon, deputy commander for U.S. Forces Iraq, will succeed Maj. Gen. Michael S. Tucker as chief of the 2nd Infantry Division this fall, the USFK official said on the condition of anonymity.
Commissioned in 1982, Cardon has served in Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iraq, according to the official.
About 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea under a mutual defense treaty signed during the 1950-53 Korean War. The 2nd Infantry Division, which has about 10,000 soldiers, is one of the most forward-deployed and combat-ready divisions in the U.S. Army.
