Ramdev in ICU, administered glucose, condition stable
Dehra Dun/Haridwar, Jun 10 (PTI) Yoga Guru Ramdev was on
Friday admitted to intensive care unit in a hospital in Dehra
Dun when his health deteriorated on the seventh day of fast
and doctors said his condition was "stable" after he was
administered glucose.
"Ramdev's liver functions are slightly derailed but his
kidney is functioning normally. He is conscious. He is being
kept in a separate room and is being constantly monitored. His
BP is 110/78 and pulse rate is 60. He is talking and there is
no problem. His health is improving," Dr S L Jethani, Medical
Superintendent of Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant, said.
The 46-year-old yoga exponent was admitted to the ICU
immediately after he was brought to the hospital where two
teams of doctors examined him, Dehra Dun Senior Superintendent
of Police G S Martolia said, in Northern Indian state
Uttarakhand.
Ramdev was being administered intervenous fluid - glucose
and normal saline - following which his condition improved,
doctors said.
He was shifted at 4 pm to the Dehra Dun hospital, 25 km
from Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, where he had been fasting
on issues of curbing corruption and bringing back black money
stashed away in foreign banks.
Uttarakhand Health Director General, Dr Asha Mathur said
Ramdev was hospitalised as his health was deteriorating.
There was commotion at the Patanjali ashram as some of
Ramdev's supporters protested the Haridwar district
administration's move to transfer him to a hospital.
Some protestors even clashed with police when the yoga
guru was being carried on a stretcher. However, it was
resolved immediately with the intervention of ashram
authorities.
Jethani said while Ramdev's kidneys were normal, he had
"some infection" in the liver, but that is "not a cause for
worry".
Two medical teams comprising neuro specialists, critical
care experts, nephrologists and cardiologists had been formed,
he said.
Sri Sri Ravishankar, founder of The Art of Living, said
his condition was "very critical in the morning and now there
is improvement in his health (after his hospitalisation). I
talked to him and requested him to stop the agitation."
He said he had met Ramdev at the hospital. Ravishankar,
who recently lost his father, had gone to Haridwar for
immersion of the ashes.
Doctors, who examined Ramdev in the morning, had said he
needed immediate hospitalisation as his health parameters were
"worrisome".
"His blood pressure is low and pulse rate is also low. If
his pulse rate and BP continue to go down, it may put some
pressure on his heart. We found that his health is going down.
It is worrisome," Chief Medical Officer Yogesh Chandra Sharma
had said after examining him.
A close aide of Ramdev, Swami Sampoornand, had claimed in
Haridwar that the yoga guru had gone into an "unconscious
state".
A Patanjali Yogapeeth spokesman had said the decision to
shift Ramdev to a hospital was taken by Uttarakhand Chief
Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, who gave directions to Haridwar
District Magistrate in this regard.
The doctors attending on him had sent in a recommendation
for his hospitalisation on "priority basis" as they had found
him suffering from dehydration and had advised him to break
his fast, which was rejected by the yoga exponent.
