Pakistan backs Afghan-led reconciliation efforts

Islamabad, June 11, IRNA – President Asif Ali Zardari Friday assured visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai of Pakistan's support to the Afghan-led reconciliation efforts in the war-ravaged country.

Speaking at a joint press conference after his talks with Karzai, Zardari added that both countries were adversely impacted by militancy and terrorism and it was necessary that both sides cooperate to deal with it.

Zardari said, "I assured my brother Karzai that Pakistan is always with Afghanistan and supports the Afghan-led peace process."

"We support the people and government of Afghanistan. We cannot expect peace in the region without peace in Afghanistan."

Zardari said that Pakistan has always taken a principled stance to support efforts intended to bring peace, prosperity and stability to Afghanistan.

Zardari reiterated his call that Pakistan has abiding interest in the stability, prosperity and development of Afghanistan and that his country was ready to contribute its share for the capacity building of Afghan institutions.

Zardari said they had very fruitful and comprehensive talks and were looking forward to having more cordial relations between the two countries.

Karzai, for his part, expressed hope that the visit would help in practical implementation of the agreements made between both countries in the recent past to boost economic activities.

Referring to the multiple visits of President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani to Afghanistan, Karzai said frequent interaction between the leadership strengthened the bonds of friendship and promoted common interests.

Earlier both presidents had held one-to-one and delegations' level talks deciding to further expand their cooperation in all fields especially in trade for better future of the peoples of both sides and to promote regional peace and security.

Zardari called for transforming bilateral transit trade agreement of Pakistan and Afghanistan to trilateral transit trade agreements with the Central Asian republics.

Briefing the media Spokesperson to the President, Farhatullah Babar said matters related to bilateral relations, Pak-Afghan Transit Trade agreement, shared threat of militancy and terrorism, need for working out joint strategy, enhancing various modes of connectivity and speedy implementation of mega connectivity projects and situation in the region were discussed.

Both presidents also agreed to develop mechanism to implement mega projects like Peshawar-Jalalabad-Herat Expressway and Peshawar-Jalalabad rail link.

Progress in the implementation of TAPI (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) gas pipeline and CASA-1000 projects was also reviewed and their speedy execution emphasized by both presidents.
