Medvedev: Russia, EU negotiated over Iran’s nuclear program

Moscow, June 11, IRNA – Russian President announced here Friday heads of Russia and EU in their meeting in Nizhni Novograd, Russia, discussed Iran’s nuclear program and ways to solve related problems.

According to IRNA correspondent in Russia, the Media Office of the Kremlin Palace said that President Dmitry Medvedev reiterated at the end of the Russia-EU Summit, “Our talks were also on major regional developments.”

He said, “We exchanged ideas with the EU heads of states on Iran’s nuclear program, the Middle East status, the situation in North Africa, the situation of the self-declared Pridnestrovie Republic in Moldavia, and the tension-ridden region of Europe.”

Medvedev did not elaborate of details of the summit level discussions, although he said, “In most of the mentioned issues our stands were either close to those of the Europeans, or quite the same as theirs.”

Medvedev added, “At the 27th round of the Russia-EU Summit we reached agreement to increase the meetings in the framework of four Middle East International Mediators’ groups, and both sides were agreed that such groups would be at ministerial level.

He said that Russia recognizes the Islamic Republic of Iran’s right to have full access to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as various Russian officials have emphasized on numerous occasions.

Medvedev added, “Unlike the United States and its western allies, Russia believes the only solution to this problem is negotiations without imposing any type of pressure on Iran.”/end
