PRESIDENT : LEBARAN ECONOMY TRAIN FARES MUST NOT BE RAISED
Jakarta, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked transportation authorities not to raise economy train fares during this year's Lebaran holidays.
"I ask the transportation minister, state minister for state enterprises, and the state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia president director to keep economic train fares at their present level," President Yudhoyono said at the state rolling stock making company PT INKA complex in Madiun, East Java, on Wednesday.
The president said the development of Indonesia's railway industry was important to move the economy and to create a sense of justice.
He added that especially in the few days before and after the Lebaran holiday, train services were expected to be a better mode of transportation than what it was in previous years.
According to the president, the future of PT INKA would be much better if the company was well managed and had a better work mentality.
Meanwhile, PT INKA President Director Roos Diatmoko in his briefing said the company was trying to finish on time all the coaches ordered by PT Kereta Api Indonesia.
He said as many as 86 coaches ordered for Lebaran transportation this year had been completed and were ready to be operated.
During his visit to the PT INKA complex, President Yudhoyono also took a few minutes of his time to try out KA Komunitas, a community train produced by the company to be a mode of Lebaran transportation this year.
President Yudhoyono's presence at PT INKA complex was part of his Ramadhan safari to visit a number of towns such as Madiun, Jombang, Surabaya and Gresik in East Java.
KA Komunitas was manufactured by PT INKA to replace KA Sapujagat (sweeper train) which was used in previous years to carry Lebaran home-going travelers.
"With more mature preparations Lebaran transportation services this year are expected to be better and more comfortable than in previous years," Yudhoyono said on board KA Komunitas on Wednesday.
The train, designed to replace KA Sapujagat, would be operated a few days before and after Lebaran day.
