DPR TO SELECT NEW NATIONAL POLICE CHIEF
Jakarta, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Wednesday the House would have two options, namely to accept or reject the candidate for the post of national police chief to be submitted by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono later this month.
"Our options are rejecting or accepting the candidate. And if the candidate is rejected, a new one has to be submitted because the president will only submit one name," he said.
He said it was not a problem for the president to submit only one name because it was allowed by the law.
President Yudhoyono is expected to submit the name of his candidate, Commissioner General Bambang Hendarso, currently the head of the National Police's criminal investigation department, to succeed General Sutanto at a plenary session of the DPR on September 16.
The name of the candidate would then be referred to the House's Consultative Body (Bamus) on September 18 for discussion by the House Commission III.
"It is hoped on September 19, the House Commission III will set the time for conducting a fit and proper test on him," he said.
Agung said he predicted the political process would be completed in a short time. "It is hoped the new national police chief can be chosen before the post-fasting holiday of Lebaran early next month," he said.
Regarding Gen Sutanto's replacement, Agung said it was done not because Sutanto had failed but because there was need for a regeneration. "I think Bambang Hendarso is capable and the correct choice for the post," he said.
