HOUSE SUPPORTS RI'S DECISION TO QUIT OPEC
Jakarta, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR)'s commission VII supports Indonesia's decision to quit the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) starting in 2009, a spokesman said.
Having become a net oil importer, it was not proper for Indonesia to remain in OPEC, House Commission VII chairman Airlangga Hartanto said here Wednesday.
"In its position as a net oil importer, Indonesia can no longer gain anything from OPEC. So, it is better to leave the organization," Hartanto said adding that the OPEC membership fee Indonesia had last paid was two million euro per year.
When Indonesia had become a net petroleum exporter again, it could return to OPEC, he said.
OPEC at a meeting at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria, on Tuesday (Sept 9) officially announced Indonesia's withdrawal from full OPEC membership.
Indonesia joined the organization in 1961.
