Pakistan lodges protest with India over ship hampering

Islamabad, June 19, IRNA - Pakistan has lodged a protest with the Indian government over Indian ship attempt to hamper a Pakistani navy ship which was in the sea to escort a ship that was freed by Somali pirates, it was announced on Sunday.

Four Pakistanis were among some 22 men freed by the Somali pirates after they received ransom and were on board of the ship returning home when the incident happened.

“A protest was lodged with the Indian government through the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on a serious incident on June 16, 2011 in which Indian Navy Ship Godavari not only hampered humanitarian operations being carried out by Pakistan Navy Ship Babur for Merchant Vessel Suez but also undertook dangerous maneuvers, which resulted in the brushing of the sides of INS Godavari and PNS Babur.

PNS Babur was escorting and assisting MV Suez which had been released after captivity by Somali pirates,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.

This incident constitutes a serious violation of international regulations pertaining to safe conduct at high seas and of the India-Pakistan Agreement of 1991 on Advance Notice of Military Exercise Maneuvers and Troops Movements, it said.

The Indian government has been asked to ensure non-recurrence of such incidents, the statement said.

The protest was lodged just hours after the Foreign Ministry announced dates for the two-day high level talks with India to be held in Islamabad on June 23-24.

“Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will meet in Islamabad on June 23-24, 2011 to discuss Peace and Security, including confidence building measures; Jammu & Kashmir; and promotion of friendly exchanges,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Indian Secretary of External Affairs, Nirupama Rao, will hold talks with her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashi.

They last met in February in Thimphu on the sidelines of the SAARC meeting.

The two countries had earlier this year agreed to resume their comprehensive dialogue on all bilateral issues to resolve outstanding issues in a constructive and forward-looking manner, two years after talks had been stalled between them in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks./end
