Iran playing constructive role in region: Afghan VP

Kabul, June 19, IRNA – First Vice-President of Afghanistan Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim said Sunday that the Iran played constructive and prominent role in regional developments.

'Afghanistan attaches great importance to deepening bilateral ties with the brotherly country of Iran,' Fahim said in his meeting here with visiting Iranain Minister of Defense Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi.

The Afghan official further hoped Vahidi's visit to Kabul would pave the way for fostering bilateral cooperation.

For his part, Iran's defense minister said Afghan nation was highly capable of bringing about security to the country.

Vahidi arrived in Kabul Saturday.

Since then, he has held separate meetings with Afghan counterpart as well as President Hamid Karzai and second vice-president of Afghanistan about issues of mutual interest.

This is the first-ever travel of an Iranian defense minister to Afghanistan./end
