COMPANY TO GROW SUPERTOY HL-2 PADDY ON 10,000 HA IN W KALIMANTAN
Pontianak, W Kalimantan, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - PT Sarana Harapan Indopangan (SHI) is planning to grow Supertoy HL-2 paddy on 10,000 hectares of land in West Kalimantan in an effort to popularize the plant as a superior rice variety among local farmers, a provincial agriculture official said.
"At present, they are growing the variety on 10 hectares of land in a two-month experiment. Five hectares are located in Sambas district and another five hectares in Singkawang city," Hazairin, head of West Kalimantan's agriculture office, said here Thursday.
In an observation done on one of the experimental cultivation areas in Singkawang city on Wednesday (Sept 10), it was found the plants were growing well, he said.
"The farmer who had sown the Supertoy HL-2 seeds said the plants were growing in a better way than the paddy variety he had used before. The new variety was also attracting rats but not in great numbers," Hazairin said.
But the farmer had also reported the new paddy variety in the experimental cultivation area was actually not yet growing maximally as it had experienced a water deficit.
Since they were planted two months ago, the seedlings had been fertilized only twice. "We used regular organic fertilizer and NPK. In one or two days' time, we will fertilize the plants for the third time," Hazairin quoted the farmer as saying.
But Hazairin also said he could not yet give a final view on the merits of the Supertoy HL-2 variety in West Kalimantan because the experiment was still in an early stage. "After the experimental paddy has been harvested and the results are known, we can decide what our next step will be," he said.
PT SHI had previously offered farmers in several parts of West Kalimantan a cooperation scheme to grow Supertoy HL-2 paddy. Farmers who had accepted the offer were taken to East Java to be trained in planting Supertoy HL-2 paddy, and after returning to West Kalimantan were given more training.
"We had three farmer groups that finally planted Superoty HL-2. Fifty other farmers will follow suit after the harvest," he said. Under PT SHI's cooperation scheme, the company provided the farmers with seeds and fertilizer and, after the harvest, the farmers would sell the Supertoy HL-2 paddy to the company at the prevailing market price.
Hazairin said the current Supertoy HL-2 controversy apart, it was very dificult to find investors who were prepared to provide farmers with seeds and fertilizer if the harvest results were still uncertain.
Supertoy Hl-2 is a paddy variety developed by combining Rojo Lele and Pandan Wangi seeds. The variety's inventors claim it can yield a harvest in only four months' time if it is planted, handled and fertilized in prescribed ways. ***2***
