GOVT PROJECTS ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY'S GROWTH AT 13.15 PCT

Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - The government has projected a growth of 13.15 percent and investments totaling US$2.5 billion in the electronic industry in the 2005-2009 period, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris said.
"Consumer electronics and electonic component industries are on the government's priority list and will be developed in accordance with the National Policy on Industrial Development," Idris said at a function to mark the production of the 10 millionth Sharp television set here on Thursday.
The minister said about 230 companies were currently engaged in the electronic industry across the country.
The electronic industry was expected to grow by an average 13.15 percent per annum in the 2005 - 2009 period, he said.
"To achieve the target, the government will need new investments totaling more than US$2.5 billion in the hope of creating 15,000 new jobs a year," he said.
For its part, the government had made every effort to create a conducive climate, particularly in the taxation system, fiscal incentives and the manpower law, he said.
In addition, the government was also encouraging electronic industries which had so far been concentrated in Java and Batam Islands to move to other parts of the country, he said.
