PRESIDENT PROMISES TO HELP GLASS BEAD CRAFTSMEN IN JOMBANG
Jombang, E Java, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has promised to provide assistance to glass bead craftsmen in Jombang district, East Java, to make their products more competitive in overseas markets.
The president made the pledge in a dialog with bead craftsmen and corn farmers in the meeting hall of Plumbon Gambang village in Gudo sub district here on Thursday.
On the occasion, the President also handed 1,000 packages of basic necessaries to residents of Plumbon village.
Earlier, Bead Craftsmen Unit spokesman Prayit asked President Yudhoyono for assistance to obtain technology-based glass processing instruments which would enable local craftsmen to make better and more sophisticated beads.
Prayit also asked the president to help facilitate the export of Jombang-made beads to other countries.
In his response to Prayit's request, President Yudhoyono said he would help provide the beads craftsmen with modern instruments to improve the quality and quantity of their products.
Concerning the marketing of the beads, Yudhoyono asked the coordinating minister for economy's task force to convey the issue to the trade minister to find a solution.
Meanwhile, Plumbon village head Agus Yudha Asmara said there were 111 bead industries employing 1,007 workers in his village.
Yudhoyono's visit to Plumbon village was part of his Ramadhan safari in East Java since Wednesday, September 10, 2008.
From the village, President Yudhoyono and his entourage would head to Sembung station and leave for Gubeng station in Surabaya by a special train and then proceed to petrochemical industry PT Petrokimia in Gresik district.
At 2 in the afternoon President Yudhoyono would be briefed on matters relating to the petrochemical industry by PT Petrokimia President Director Arifin Tasrif.
In the afternoon, the head of state was scheduled to attend a fast-breaking get-together with local people at the PT Petrokimia auditorium.
After the fast-breaking function and sunset prayers, the President would take part in a "Shalat Tarawih" (non-obligatory evening prayer service during the Muslim fasting month) at Sunan Giri mosque in Gresik.
After the Shalat Tarawih the president and his entourage would retire to the Shangri-La Hotel in Surabaya to spend the night before returning to Jakarta the next morning (Friday).
