PRESIDENT ENCOURAGES FARMERS TO CULTIVATE NEW PADDY VARIETIES
Nganjuk, East Java Province, Sept. 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono encouraged farmers to cultivate new paddy varieties in order to increase national food production.
"Keep on cultivating new varieties. It's important because many Indonesian sons and daughters as well as farmers who are geniuses are doing research to improve food production," the president said in a dialog with hundreds of farmers at Demangan village, Tanjung Anom sub district, Nganjuk District, on Thursday.
The dialog with local farmers was part of the President's agenda during his Ramadan (fasting month) Safari in East Java Province from September 10 to 12, 2008.
The head of state also instructed the agriculture ministry to support research on paddy varieties conducted by farmers and others.
"I encourage the people to find ideas to conduct research on whatever could improve agricultural production," Yudhoyono said.
He hoped that this year the country would be able to achieve food self-sufficiency and in the future it could have food product surpluses.
The President said the government continuously supported agricultural projects among other things by providing an agricultural subsidy amounting to Rp30 trillion next year.
"I hope the funds will be utilized fairly and properly," he said.
He also said cooperation between companies and farmers must be conducted transparently and to the benefit of farmers.
"If a problem arises, it should be dealt with properly so it does not lead to misunderstandings," he said.
The President's entourage during his Ramadan Safari include First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sri Mulyani Idnrawati and Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie.
