Western states fail to fulfill commitments on drugs smuggling

Tehran, June 21, IRNA – A security official at Iran’s Interior Ministry regretted Monday that western states have failed to fulfill their commitments on fight against illegal drugs smuggling.

Deputy Interior Minister on Security Affairs Ali Abdollahi told IRNA that no “serious move has yet been made by western states to fight against smuggling of narcotic drugs.”

'They (western states) just publish annual figures and reports which are nothing but slogans,' Abdollahi complained.

He made the remarks at the end of a meeting here between security officials from Iran and Afghanistan.

The two sides exchanged views on ways to protect border areas in order to prevent moves of drugs smugglers.

Although illegal drugs were produced in Afghanistan, drugs smuggling is an international issue, Abdollahi said.

He added that as a result of Tehran-Kabul's strives, drugs smugglers should no more feel that the region was a safe heaven for their dangerous trade./end
