Bomber kills anti-Taliban peace committee head in Pakistan

Islamabad, June 21, IRNA – A suicide bomber blew his explosive-laden vehicle outside the head of a pro-government peace body and killed him and two other people in northwest Pakistan Monday night, police and local media said.

The attack at Matani town, some 20 kilometers from Peshawar, also injured five more people and destroyed several buildings in the area.

Sources said that chief of the anti-Taliban peace militia, Ejaz Bacha, was killed in the attack.

Police sources said that the bomber rammed his explosive-packed vehicle into the guest house of the head of the peace committee, who was sitting with several members of the committee.

The attack was so powerful that it destroyed the guest house and also damaged nearby shops and other buildings, witnesses said. They feared several people may have trapped under the debris of the destroyed buildings.

Police said the house of the slain peace committee chief was located near market place and there would be more casualties if shops had been opened.

Sources said that several police men were among the injured who were deployed at a nearby check post. The injured were transferred to the city’s main hospital.

TV footage showed several destroyed buildings and the rescue teams searching for the people.

Taliban militants regularly target members of the peace committee at Matani, a small town near the tribal area of Darra Adaml Khel.

Sources close to the peace committee say that nearly 100 members of the peace committee have been killed in Taliban attacks.

This was the second Talban attack on members of the pro-government volunteers in Pakistan’s northwest in 24 hours.

Armed militants attacked houses of pro-government tribesmen in Mohmand tribal region late Sunday night, killing four people, including three members of a family, security officials said.

The militants threw hand grenades at the houses of two pro-government volunteers. Head of the family Gulbab Khan, his son and a nephew died in the attack.

Residents in Mohmand tribal agency have formed private peace committee to help the security forces fight militants.

Taliban militants regularly target pro-government tribesmen and according to official figures nearly 140 volunteers have been killed in attacks. Many civilians have also been killed in Taliban suicide attacks in the region.

Pakistan army said on Sunday that 25 militants were killed in Mohmand agency in air and ground operation by the security forces.

Four soldiers were also killed and several injured in clashes, an army statement said.

Pakistani officials say that militants also receive help from militants in Afghanistan./end
