Pakistani MPs welcome Zardari’s Iran visit

Islamabad, June 22, IRNA - Two senior Pakistani political leaders on Tuesday welcomed the upcoming visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Iran and hoped that the visit would provide an opportunity to the two key regional Muslim nations to cooperate against terrorism.
President Asif Ali Zardari is scheduled to pay a two-day visit to Iran on June 23. During his stay in Tehran, the Pakistani President will attend an international conference on campaign against terrorism.
Talking to IRNA, former Interior Minister and Member of Parliament Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that Pakistan and Iran were two brotherly nations and must work together in eliminating the menace of terrorism from the region.
“Terrorism has become a global problem”, he opined.
He added that it was very good to see that an international conference against terrorism is to be held in Iran.
“Iran is our brother and we share common interests”, said the former minister.
Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao added that Iran’s role in international politics could not be ignored and every effort to isolate the Islamic Republic would fail.
“Super powers are trying to pressurize Iran”, he noted.
Welcoming the upcoming visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Iran, he said the visit would further cement Iran-Pak strong ties.
The politician urged Pakistani government to cooperate with Iran in every sector irrespective of western pressure.
“Our response to Iranian offers of electricity and natural gas is not as positive as it should be”, he pointed out.
Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that Pakistan has always enjoyed strong relations with Iran.
Meanwhile, Tariq Azeem Khan, Senator of Pakistan Muslim League-Q, appreciated the decision of President Zardari to visit Iran to participate in the upcoming conference against terrorism.
Noting that Iran and Pakistan were two brotherly neighbors, he said the two capitals should join hands in fight against terrorism.
“We have to cooperate with each other to root out terrorism”, he opined.
Tariq Azeem Khan believed that terrorists were trying to cause misunderstanding between Iran and Pakistan.
President Zardari would visit Iran and hold a meeting with his Iranian counter part President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Calling of expansion of all-out cooperation between the two countries, the political leader said Pakistan should broaden cooperation with Iran in all fields.
“Pakistan should enhance cooperation with Iran in energy sector and this visit would provide an opportunity for Pakistan to discuses such important issues”, Tariq Azeem Khan opined.
The Global Fight against Terrorism International Summit would be held on June 25 and 26 with the aim of increasing international convergence and cooperation on fighting terrorism.
Officials from 80 countries as well as regional and international organizations would take part in the two-day conference.
Earlier in May, Iran hosted the International Conference on the Global Alliance against Terrorism for a Just Peace (GAATJP) in Tehran./end
