IMPORTS RISE DURING FASTING MONTH

Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - Import of goods such as fruit, textiles and industrial parts will rise by 15 to 20 percent during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadhan, the director general of customs and excise, Suprijadi, said here on Thursday.

"The number of export and import containers has reached 5,000 a day. Import of fruit such as dates, textiles and industrial parts total 3,000 containers, an increase by 15 to 20 percent," he said when inspecting export-import activities at Tanjung Priok port.

He said the trend was normal during the fasting month to meet the people's increased needs ahead of the post-fasting holiday of Lebaran.

Customs technical director Agung Kuswandono said a week before and after Lebaran the number of containers coming to Tanjung Priok could be 169 percent higher than on ordinary days.

He said the rise was feared to be able to hinder the flows of goods after Lebaran. "A week before Lebaran unloading activities usually stop as workers return to their home villages for Lebaran but ships keep arriving with cargo, causing a backlog. A week after Lebaran the situation is the same as importers do not collect their goods," he said.
Agung said he was now devising ways to put the container flow in order so that it would not hinder traffic of goods after Lebaran.
