President: Sardasht chemical attack, sign of West int'l terrorism

Tehran, June 28, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here on Tuesday said making use of western chemical weapons by the Iraqi Baathist regime against innocent people in northwestern Iranian city of Sardasht in 1987 was an indication to international terrorism led by the West.

The President made the statement in his message released on the occasion of anniversary of the chemical attack against Sardasht by the regime of Saddam Hussein during its 1980-88 imposed war against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Ahmadinejad reiterated that the Middle East region has always been the target of terrorist operations.

Sardasht was the first region in the world attacked by chemical weapons provided by the West to the Iraqi Baathist regime, the President said in his message.

A large number of civilians were killed by the attack and those survived are still suffering from severe injuries caused by the attack.

Sardasht is located in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan./end
