South Korea's infant deaths decline in 2009
SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- The number of infant deaths in South Korea dropped over 10 percent in 2009 from a year earlier apparently thanks to advanced medical technologies, a report showed Wednesday.
The number of babies who died within a year of birth came to 1,415 in 2009, down 10.4 percent or 165 from a year earlier, according to the report by Statistics Korea.
The nation's infant mortality rate was 3.2 per every 1,000 newborns, down from 3.4 a year earlier. It was also lower than the average rate of 4.6 for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the report showed.
Of infant deaths here, baby boys made up 53.5 percent, with their mortality rate standing at 3.3, higher than baby girls' 3.1, according to the report.
Half of infant deaths were caused by medical conditions right before and after their births. Deformities and chromosomal anomalies were blamed for 18.4 percent of the total number of deaths, the report showed.
