85% People identify unsafe blood transfusion, used syringe 85% causes Hepatitis B/C

ISLAMABAD (PPI) - According to the results of a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, majority of the people were aware of the fact that unsafe blood transfusion (85%) and used syringe (85%) caused Hepatitis B/C. A majority also identified contaminated water (78%) as a cause which is in fact not so. This was a prevalent misconception.

In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question: “How do you think Hepatitis B/C is transmitted?” 85 % people said that it spread through unsafe blood transfusion; 85 % identified used syringe as a cause; 77% agreed that using contaminated barber’s instruments was a cause; 76% knew that it could be transferred from mother to child; 74% and 76 % said yes to contaminated dental instruments and surgical instruments respectively and 72% agreed that using contaminated instruments for eye and nose piercing spread the disease. A surprising 78% responded that contaminated water also aided the spread of the disease which is a misconception since contaminated water does not transmit Hepatitis B/C.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2697 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during 12 June- 18 June 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
