AGRICULTURE MINISTRY TO LAUNCH FOOD DIVERSIFICATION PROGRAM AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Jakarta, Sept. 12 (ANTARA) - The agriculture ministry will launch a food diversification program in 201 elementary schools and Islamic primary schools throughout Indonesia in 2009.
The program was aimed at introducing various local food available in a number of regions to elementary school children in the country's 32 provinces, Achmad Suryana, head of the agriculture ministry's food resilience agency, said here on Friday.
"Food consumption is very much related to the local culture and traditions, therefore it needs to be introduced to children at their earliest age," he said.
Suryana said that Indonesia has diversified staple food in many regions, however their existence was replaced by just one staple food, namely rice.
Through the Food Consumption Diversification Acceleration Program (P2KP), the government would encourage cultivation of local edible plants in school yards, he said. Each school located in the country's 201 districts, will get funds amounting to Rp20 million for a year.
"If the implementation of the program will be successful in 2009, the program will involve more schools," he said.
A presidential regulation on the Food Consumption Diversification Acceleration Program (P2KP) will be issued in the near future.
"The program is expected to improve the food consumption quality and nutrition of the Indonesians," Suryana said.
