KPK MUST INVESTIGATE ELECTION COMMISSION SOON : OBSERVER
Jakarta, Sept 12 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) must act immediately to investigate alleged corruption in the General Elections Commission (KPU), Boni Hargens, a political analyst at the University of Indonesia (UI) said.
"The KPU's performance is very bad and not transparent. The KPK must, therefore, act now," Hargens said in Depok on Friday.
He said the anti-graft commission had received a report on alleged corruption committed by KPU personnel in verifying the electoral qualifications of political parities.
Boni said frequent delays in matters that were KPU's responsibility had also sparked public criticism. "KPU is often inconsistent. It criticized political parties that were late in submitting their administrative documents but is itself always behind schedule or late in implementing almost all preparatory stages of the polls such as registration, administrative verification, factual verification, announcement of electoral contestants and provisional voters' lists," he said.
With these weaknesses, there was small reason to hope that the KPU would be able to conduct a democratic election. "We cannot hope that the KPU under the current management will be able to conduct a democratic election," he said.
The KPU's attitude toward the problems involving a number of political parties was also unclear. Its decision to allow four political parties -- which had not passed the administrative selection-- to take part in the elections reflected its unprofessional ways of working.
After the KPU declared the four political parties unqualified to take part in the 2009 polls, the parties took their cases to the State Administrative Court (PTUN) and won.
"The KPU should have been firm from the beginning and blocked the way of any political party that had failed to pass the official selection," he said.
Another controversy arose when the KPU filed an appeal over the case of the 'Republiku Party' which had also successfully challenged its disqualification through the PTUN.
He said the 2009 general elections could be delayed if the Republiku Party case remained unsettled.
