KNPC to start KD 11-bln projects in ''11 - official

KUWAIT, July 4 (KUNA) -- The total cost of the projects which the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) works on in 2011 are expected to hit KD 11 billion, Deputy Managing Director for Projects Hatem Al-Awadhi revealed Monday.
In an exclusive statemetn to KUNA, Al-Awadhi unveiled that the company was putting the final touch on the plans and designs of the fifth gas project whose cost would amounts to KD 315 million. (One KD equals USD 3.645).
The KNPC board would mull the project designs shortly before passing to the Kuwaiti Petroleum Corporation for final approval, Al-Awadhi said.
He disclosed that the board is studyig a KD 200-million-worth sulfur handling project, describing it as the most important under-study projects.
The company also planning to set up a the new refinery at total cost exceed KD four billion and biofuel project at a cost of KD 4.6 billion which will wou ld make the Kuwait refineries products highly competative on the global markt.
The state-owned KNPC has been carrying out the role of refining crude since 1960.
Its roles also include liquefying gas and marketing oil products on the local scale through the three refineries of Al-Ahmadi Port, Al-Shuaiba and Abdullah Ports.
The joint refining capacity of Kuwait is around 940,000 barrels per day, while the production capacity of liquefied gas is 1.680 million sq feet a day.
Thanks to modernised equipment used at these refineries, KNPC produces around 30 different types of petroleum derivatives, like kerosene, petrol and diesel, among others.
