AU chief tells Merkel to butt out of Libyan politics

Berlin, July 6, IRNA -- The head of the African Union, Jean Ping here Tuesday rebuked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for calling for Libyan leader Moammar Qadhafi to step down from power.

Speaking after a meeting with Merkel, Ping said, 'The Libyans must decide which people are acceptable to them. It should not be up to us to say who is acceptable and who is not.'

Ping was reacting to remarks by Merkel who told media representatives that Qadhafi was no longer legitimized to head his country.
'A solution must be found where Qadhafi no longer leads Libya,' Merkel was quoted saying.

Although Germany backs the ouster of the Qadhafi regime, it is not directly invloved in NATO's contorversial military campaign in Libya.
