Police Seize Large Amounts of Illicit Drugs in Southern Province
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's law enforcement police squads have seized nearly one ton of narcotics in the country's Persian Gulf province of Bushehr in Southern Iran during the first three months of current Iranian year (started on March 21), a provincial police chief announced on Wednesday.
"During the first three months of the current year, over 750kg of different types of narcotics have been discovered in the province and 532 individuals involved in drug trade have been identified and arrested," Bushehr's Police Chief Reza Mohammadi Yeganeh told reporters on Wednesday.
The commander added that police forces in the province have seized more than 4 tons of narcotics last year (March 2010-March 2011).
The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations since last year.
The Iranian police measures along eastern borders have forced drug-traffickers to resort to other routes, including the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf, to smuggle their drug cargos which originate in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Iran, located at the crossroad of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan to Europe, and according to the statistical figures released by the UN, Iran ranks first among the world countries in preventing entry of drugs and decreasing demand for narcotics.
