JUSUF KALLA : GOLKAR NOT TO HOLD PARTY CONVENTION
Jakarta, Sept 13 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party chairman Jusuf Kalla said he considered the party convention held in 2004 for choosing a presidential candidate to be a failure.
"It produced nothing. Its cost was very high and it was finally an outsider who was chosen and he lost. So, what was the result," he said here on Friday.
He made the statement following pressure for the party to hold a convention to nominate a presidential candidate for the election next year.
Golkar members Yudhy Chrisnandi and Fadel Muhammad had recently voiced the need for the party to hold the convention.
Kalla said the decision not to hold a convention was made in a national leadership meeting and the meeting had already decided not to hold the convention again.
"It is ok for anyone to express an opinion but like other parties Golkar also has its own rules. The national leadership meeting has decided not to hold a convention," he said.
When asked about the need to hold the convention to raise collection of votes Kalla denied that a convention would help to increase vote collection significantly.
"It is not true if convention can help raise votes significantly. In 2004 they just rose 0.4 percent while the population grew more than that around 1.5 percent," he said.
