Top Politician Blasts US Weak Record in Iraq's Reconstruction

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iraqi politician lashed out at the US for its weak performance in his country's reconstruction, and urged full withdrawal of US forces from Iraq.
Speaking to the Islamic republic news agency, the leader of Iraqi National Congress, Ahmad Chalabi said that Iraqi government has under the US supervision spent tens of billion dollars on providing security, rebuilding structures and reforming the army, but the investment has had no benefit for Iraqis.

He pointed to role of Americans in establishing infrastructures for Iraqis and said that Americans claim spending more than four billion dollars on Iraq power projects but the activities have not had any impact on improvement of Iraqis' living conditions.

Iraq has purchased 56 types of power generating instruments and equipment from the US General Electric company with the capacity to produce 7,000 megawatts of power, said Chalabi, adding that all the money for the equipment have been paid by Iraqi government despite Americans' claim of providing the sum themselves.

The point worth noting is despite long time passing since purchase of the equipment and generators from the US, none of them have been put on the power production cycle and the project has virtually had no benefit for the Iraqis, he added.

Meantime, Chalabi appreciated Iran's services to Iraqis, including Iran's efforts in the trade and commercial domains.

He said the visit of Iranian delegation, led by the First Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi, to Iraq would serve as an effective step in promotion of mutual cooperation.
