SOME 30 CIPINANG PRISON INMATES RELOCATED TO NUSAKAMBANGAN ISLAND

Cilacap, Sept 13 (ANTARA) - Some 30 former inmates of Cipinang jail in Jakarta arrived here Saturday enroute to several penitentiaries on Nusakambnagan Island to which they have been relocated.

The prisoners arrived by bus at Cilacap's Wijayapura ferry port from where they were transported by Pengayoman II ferry boat to Nusakambangan at 8 am Saturday morning.

Serving jail terms of 3.5 years to 14 years, the 30 prisoners from Cipinang jail would be temporarily accommodated at the Batu correctional institute in Nusakambangan and later distributed to a few other prisons on the island.
Earlier, chief of correctional institution division at Central Java Law and Human Rights office Bambang Winahyo had said prisons in the province were ready to receive 750 prisoners transferred from Jakarta's Cipinang jail.
"As many as 400 inmates will be accommodated in Nusakambangan while 350 others will be moved to other jails in Central Java," Winahyo said in Semarang on Wednesday.
He said the 24 jails and 20 detention centers in Central Java had a combined capacity to accommodate 11,100 prisoners while at present there were holding only 9,000.
The transfer of 750 inmates from Cipinang would be made in several stages. In the first stage, some 60 were moved last Tuesday, Sept 9, 2008.
