Senior MP: Iran, Egypt to Develop Closer Ties Soon
TEHRAN (FNA)- Tehran and Cairo will soon resume and develop close relations, given the two nations and governments' willingness and enthusiasm for the resumption of ties between the two powerful Muslim states, a senior Iranian legislator underlined on Saturday.
"Iran's relations with Egypt grow closer every day," Vice-Chairman of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Esmae'il Kosari told FNA, adding that the Egyptian nation also seeks to bolster bilateral relations with the Iranian people and government.
He referred to the efforts made by the two countries' officials to improve ties between Iran and Egypt, and said Iranian authorities have discussed the issue with their Egyptian counterparts on many occasions and members of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission have already made numerous visits to Cairo in this regard.
The lawmaker underlined that resumption of Tehran-Cairo relations serves the two nations' interests, and said Iranian and Egyptian officials are working hard to develop these ties in the near future.
Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has also voiced confidence about the improvement of relations between Iran and Egypt, but meantime said that resuming ties between the two Muslim states needs time and patience.
"Egypt is currently under certain pressure, yet the Egyptian government and nation are in consensus about the improvement of relations with Iran as soon as possible," Salehi said in May.
After the collapse of Hosni Mubarak's regime, the Iranian and Egyptian officials voiced their interest in the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries and Salehi officially invited the then Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Al-Arabi to pay a visit to Tehran.
The Iranian foreign minister and his former Egyptian counterpart also held a meeting in Bali, Indonesia last month.
During the meeting which took place on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the two diplomats conferred on ways to promote the bilateral relations between Tehran and Cairo, and stressed the need for continued consultations in this regard.
Al-Arabi had earlier announced that Cairo would soon open a new page with Iran.
Al-Arabi who was replaced with Mohamed El-Orabi became the next Arab League Secretary.
