MOUNT DUKONO IN NORTH MALUKU SPEWS DUST, SAND

Ternate, Sept 13 (ANTARA) - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera district, North Maluku, spewed dust and sand into the air on Friday but local authorities believe the activity is not too dangerous and therefore have not ordered residents to evacuate.
"Yesterday, Mount Dukono spewed dust and sand into the sky and the fallout settled on the roofs of local residents but there was no evacuation instruction from the authorities," Salim, a North Halmahera resident in Tobelo said when reached by phone from Ternate, Saturday.
Mount Dukono showed the same activity last July and at the time the fallout also affected people in Tobelo, North Halmahera district's capital.
Meanwhile, the head of the Mount Dukono Observation Post, Iwan Amat, said the emission of dust and sand was a sign of increased volcanic activity but it was still taking place at a normal level so it was not necessary to raise the volcano's 'readiness' status.
Therefore, the local community should continue to do their daily activities normally while staying alert. But all mountain climbing activity had to be stopped temporarily, he said.
"We will keep on observing the volvano. If its activity rises to a level where it endangers people, we will certainly sound the alarm," he said.
Mount Dukono is one of five active volcanoes in North Maluku. Another one of them is Mount Gamalama in Ternate which showed a rise in volcanic activity a few months ago and is now on an 'alert' status.
