RAILWAY REVITALIZATION PROJECTS SHOULD BE OFFERED TO INVESTORS : MINISTER

Padang, Sept 13 (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said projects to be implemented under the railway system revitalization program in Indonesia ,including in West Sumatra, needed to be offered to investors.
"West Sumatra received Rp50 billion in funds from the government to revitalize its railways in 2008. It will take five years to finish the whole process, so cooperation with investors is much needed," the minister said here on Saturday.
"If the feasibility studies are favorable, investors will certainly be motivated to participate. Meanwhile, the funding will come from the state budget and the special budgets of district and city admnistrations," he said.
He said revitalizing the railway system was necessary to help improve the economic conditions of West Sumatra's people.
One of the projects that should be carried out in cooperation with the private sector was the railway link between Padang and Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) which was due to begin next year.
The minister said the allocated funding plan in 2009 for West Sumatera would depend on the detailed planning of the train operations including control operations towards buildings standing on the paths of railways.
"The regional administration should approach the people living in those buildings to support the train operation," he said.
Meanwhile, West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi said he would soon form a team to inspect the prospective paths of the railways and , where necessary, free them from people's houses.
"If the people have a building license from state railway company (PJKA) they should get a compensation but if not then their houses will be torn down without any compensation," he said.
He said the West Sumatra administration was trying to attract foreign investors from Macau, China, Korea and India to take part in the province's railway revitalization projects
