Speaker calls meeting on women's reservation bill tomorrow
New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Taking forward her effort to build
a consensus on the Women's Reservation Bill, Lok Sabha (lower
house of Indian parliament) Speaker Meira Kumar has called a
meeting of political parties Thursday to discuss the issue.
Kumar will meet leaders of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj
Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, single-member parties and
Independent members to deliberate on the issue of according 33
per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state
Assemblies.
The Speaker had called a similar meeting of major
political parties on June 22 which failed to reach a
consensus.
The SP and the BSP, known opponents of the proposed
legislation, had skipped the June 22 meeting.
The Speaker has again invited them Thursday.
The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of
Indian parliament) amid high drama in March last year.
